If I hook these plates up to a battery, something interesting and really useful happens.

The plates are initially neutral, but they do have charges in them. It’s just that the positive and negative charges cancel each other out:

As the current starts to flow from the battery, though, it pushes extra electrons onto one plate:

Now the bottom plate is slightly negatively charged. This extra negative charge pushes some electrons away from the top plate, so that it becomes slightly positively charged:
